Chomsky (Lāčplēša 68, Riga) – located in a district away from touristy areas like Old Town, this lounge attracts its share of both local and international students. Such patrons are looking for a relaxing atmosphere that’s non-pretentious and not so pricey. Chomsky serves such needs and more. It’s no accident that the bar owners chose the name “Chomsky” – they’re fans of American liberal political critic & intellectual Noam Chomsky (who they consider a symbol of political freedoms long absent in Latvia). Aside from that, patrons appreciate not only the laid-back vibe at “Chomsky”, but its highly praised Belarusian vodka Svayak, high-quality Latvian beer Bruvera, the honey beer Medalus (on tap), and German beers like Hefeweizen and Hefeweizen Dunkel. Along with the atmosphere, there’s also occasional live music from local indie rock bands.
